Portuguese Text to Speech: Brazil vs Portugal
Portuguese text to speech needs the right variant. Compare Brazilian and European Portuguese voices, spelling and pronunciation differences, and how to choose.
Portuguese text to speech works best when you choose the variant first. Brazilian Portuguese has about 203 million native speakers (a 2022 figure), and European Portuguese about 10 million (a 2012 figure). The two differ in pronunciation, grammar and spelling, so pick the variant your listeners use before you pick a voice.
This guide compares the two variants, explains the 1990 spelling agreement, lists the Portuguese voices the main providers offer as of October 2026, and shows how to generate audio with OndaLabs.
Brazilian vs European Portuguese: what changes in the audio
The differences show up in speech, grammar and spelling. The table summarises the main ones, using the sources' descriptions.
| Feature | Brazilian Portuguese | European Portuguese | |---|---|---| | Unstressed vowels | Vowels stay more open, even when reduced | Vowels are often reduced further, sometimes to a near-close vowel that Brazilian lacks | | "Setembro" | [seˈtẽbɾu] | [sɨˈtẽbɾu] | | Progressive form | estar + gerund: ela está dançando | estar a + infinitive | | Object pronouns | Before the verb: ele me viu | After the verb: ele viu-me | | Native speakers | About 203 million (2022) | About 10 million (2012) |
The sources describe these differences in the Brazilian Portuguese article. They also note that the written standards differ roughly as much as written American and British English do. The varieties barely differ in formal writing and are mutually intelligible. A quick way to hear the difference is to generate a sentence with many unstressed vowels, such as one containing setembro, in a Brazilian voice and a European voice, then compare them side by side.
The 1990 spelling agreement and your script
The Orthographic Agreement of 1990 was signed in Lisbon on 16 December 1990. Brazil adopted it on 1 January 2009. Portugal signed it into law on 21 July 2008, applied it to official documents from 1 January 2012, and ended the transition on 12 May 2015. About 1.6% of words change in the European norm, against about 0.5% in the Brazilian norm.
The biggest visible change is in European spelling, where silent consonants are dropped. The c in facto goes, so the word becomes fato. Both anónimo and anônimo remain legitimate, and so do both facto and fato. The agreement's Wikipedia article has the full history.
For a voice script, write in one orthography and stay consistent. This research found no source that explains how any voice treats spelling variants, so check your text before you generate audio.
Which providers offer Brazilian and European Portuguese voices
| Provider | Brazilian Portuguese (pt-BR) | European Portuguese (pt-PT) | |---|---|---| | Azure | 25+ entries, including HD voices Thalita and Macerio and 16 standard voices | Raquel, Duarte and Fernanda (standard), plus Rui (MAI-Voice-2 and Flash) | | Amazon Polly | Camila, Vitoria, Ricardo, Thiago | Ines, Cristiano | | Google Cloud | About 43 voices, including Chirp 3 HD | 4 voices (Standard and WaveNet); Chirp 3 HD does not list pt-PT | | ElevenLabs | Portuguese on Multilingual v2, Flash v2.5, v3 and v4 | Same models; variants are listed on ElevenLabs' capabilities page |
Counts are as of October 2026 and approximate where the source is a summary. Azure's pt-BR count includes HD and Flash variants.
The dubbing products have their own lists. ElevenLabs' dubbing v2 accepts pt-BR and pt-PT as region tags, one of 14 dialect tags (ElevenLabs dubbing languages). YouTube's auto dubbing help page lists Portuguese only, with no pt-BR or pt-PT split. Check each product's list separately before you choose a variant for dubbing.
Azure writes Portuguese phonetic notation in IPA rather than the sapi set, with tildes for nasal vowels. If you need exact control, check the phoneme route for your provider before you rely on it.
How to choose a Portuguese voice for your audience
- Decide who is listening: Brazil, Portugal or both. If the answer is both, choose one variant and say so in your project notes.
- Write the script in that variant's grammar. Use estar + gerund for Brazil and estar a + infinitive for Europe.
- Place object pronouns to match. Brazilian scripts put them before the verb, European scripts usually after.
- Generate the same paragraph with two or three voices and listen for vowel openness and pacing.
- Keep the spelling consistent with the agreement your audience uses.
Mesoclisis, as in dar-lhe-ia, is archaic in Brazil, so a Brazilian script rarely needs it.
If you publish for both audiences, write two versions of the script rather than forcing one. Each version can then use its own grammar, pronoun placement and spelling.

Frequently asked questions
Which Portuguese variant should I choose?
Choose the variant your listeners use. Brazil has about 203 million native speakers (a 2022 figure), and Portugal about 10 million (a 2012 figure). Write the script in that variant's grammar and listen to a sample before you publish.
Do Portuguese voices handle the 1990 spelling agreement?
This guide's sources do not say how any voice treats spelling variants. Write one orthography consistently and check the script before you generate audio. Both anónimo and anônimo, and both facto and fato, remain legitimate.
Can a Brazilian voice read European Portuguese text?
The two varieties are mutually intelligible, and their written standards barely differ in formal writing. The sources do not say how listeners judge a mismatched voice. Test a sample with people from your audience.
Is there a free Portuguese text to speech tool?
OndaLabs has a Free plan at $0 with 2,000 credits a month, about 2 minutes of audio on Onda Lite. That is enough to test a Portuguese script. Check the current terms of other tools before you rely on their free plans.
Can I use Portuguese AI voices commercially?
OndaLabs includes commercial use on Starter and above, from $9 a month. Check each provider's terms before publishing. OpenAI's usage policy requires clear disclosure to end users that a TTS voice is AI-generated.
Which providers offer European Portuguese voices?
Azure lists three standard voices plus Rui, and Amazon Polly lists Ines and Cristiano. Google lists four pt-PT voices on Standard and WaveNet, and its Chirp 3 HD does not list pt-PT. ElevenLabs lists Portuguese on its models, with variants on its capabilities page.
