AI narrated audiobooks on Audible are not available through a normal ACX upload. As of October 2026, ACX requires human narration unless it is authorized, and it prohibits unauthorized AI or text-to-speech recordings. The routes that do exist are invite-only programs, such as Amazon's KDP Virtual Voice beta for eligible ebooks in the US, and each store labels AI narration in its own way.

Does Audible allow AI-narrated audiobooks?

Not for an independent author uploading their own AI audio. ACX's audio submission requirements say narration "must be human-narrated unless authorized," and they prohibit unauthorized text-to-speech, AI or automated recordings (ACX audio submission requirements, last updated April 15, 2026).

ACX does run an invite-only beta called Voice Replica. It lets selected narrators create a replica of their own voice from a sample recording, so the narrator stays in control. Audible will not use a replica without the narrator's approval. The only indie route into Amazon's AI narration that these sources show is KDP Virtual Voice, which is also invite-only.

Store-by-store rules, as of October 2026

Every rule below is dated October 2026. Store programs change often, so check the current page before you upload. If you produce the narration yourself, OndaLabs pricing shows which plan includes commercial use.

KDP Virtual Voice: eligibility, price and royalty

KDP Virtual Voice is Amazon's route for indie authors, and it is still an invite-only beta. The details below come from Amazon's KDP help pages.

  • Who can apply. It is invite-only, and the US marketplace is the only one supported. KDP lists more than 80 voices.
  • Language. The primary language must be English, Spanish, Italian or French. Japanese is not supported.
  • Ebook requirements. The ebook must be live (not pre-order), reflowable, with an NCX or Interactive table of contents.
  • Ineligible titles. Public-domain books are not eligible, and a title is ineligible if an Audible or ACX audiobook of it already exists.
  • Price and royalty. The list price runs from $3.99 to $14.99. The royalty is 40% during the beta, and KDP notes that a lower rate may apply in future to books priced below the minimum. Payments arrive about 60 days after the end of the sales month.
  • KDP Select. The audiobook must be exclusive to Audible while enrolled, and it is not eligible for Free Book Promotions or Kindle Countdown Deals.

KDP may remove an audiobook from sale if it finds an eligibility problem. The main source for these terms is the KDP eligibility page, together with KDP's pricing help pages.

What ACX says about AI narration

ACX has two AI-related rules that matter here. The first is the human-narration rule above. The second is its Voice Replica beta, which was announced in July 2025 and covers a small group of invited narrators in the US. Replicas are free during the beta. Titles that use one are labelled "Narrated by Narrator's voice replica."

ACX also changed its royalty model. From May 26, 2026, exclusive titles earn 50% (the legacy rate was 40%) and non-exclusive titles earn 30% (the legacy rate was 25%). The legacy model ends by the end of 2026, according to ACX's April 2026 announcement (ACX new royalty model). These rates apply to human-narrated ACX titles. Do not apply them to KDP Virtual Voice.

Apple Books, Google Play Books and Spotify

Each of these stores has its own digital narration program, and the requirements differ.

  • Apple Books. Digital narration is English only, and the ebook must be reflowable and on sale in Apple Books. You must hold the audio rights. Requests go through Draft2Digital for indie authors or Ingram CoreSource for publishers. Production takes about one to two months, and pre-orders are not accepted. Apple chooses the specific voice from the voice type you pick, and the choice cannot be changed after submission. The description must begin with this sentence: "This is an Apple Books audiobook narrated by a digital voice based on a human narrator." (Apple digital narration guide)
  • Google Play Books. Auto-narration is available in English, French, German, Hindi, Italian, Portuguese (Brazil) and Spanish, for EPUB books you have rights to. There is no program fee during the beta, no exclusivity, and the Play list price cannot exceed the price on any other platform. The editor lets you change the default narrator voice and speed, give other characters their own voices, fix pronunciation and add pauses (Google Play Books auto-narration).
  • Spotify. Spotify's audiobook creation tools are available in the US in English, with a limit of five projects. Narration uses a digital voice, and most audiobooks publish within 72 hours. Titles are labelled "Narrated by Digital Voice" (Spotify audiobook creation tools).

Voices by INaudio: the LPF-only route

INaudio, formerly Findaway, distributes digitally narrated titles to retail partners. Its rules are strict:

  • It accepts only unmodified LPF packages from Google Play Books, ElevenLabs or Spoken Press.
  • MP3s and other audio files cannot replace the LPF.
  • Digitally narrated titles go only to retail partners that accept them, and that acceptance may change.
  • Cloned, synthetic, AI and text-to-speech narration must not be submitted or identified as human narration.
  • A digital voice narration disclosure is added to the description automatically.
  • Cloned voices need the necessary rights, including the cloned person's consent where that applies. Public-domain titles are not accepted.

In short, if you produce your own audio with a text-to-speech tool, INaudio will not take it. Check INaudio's digital voice narration rules before you assume a route works.

Labels and disclosure

Each store adds its own label or sentence, as the main table shows. The principle underneath is the same everywhere: do not present AI narration as human narration. INaudio's rules state this directly, and the required Apple sentence exists for the same reason. Where a store does not specify a label, the safest choice is to describe the narration in your listing copy in plain words.

Rights and contracts

Google, Apple, KDP and INaudio all require that you hold the audio rights to the book. Rights are also the main question if you work with a publisher. The Authors Guild updated its AI model clauses on April 29, 2026, with a category covering "AI translations and audiobook narrations." Its summary says that using AI to narrate audiobooks or translate works requires "the author's prior written consent." The full clause text was not available in the sources we checked, so read your own contract instead. This is not legal advice.

If you clone a voice, use only a recording you have permission to use. OndaLabs' custom voice option works on that basis.

What listeners think

The Audio Publishers Association reported in June 2026 that AI-narrated titles were 0.03% of 2025 US audiobook revenue. Willingness to try AI narration fell from 70% to 61%, and 16% of listeners have heard an AI-voiced audiobook (APA 2026 results). APA's Jim Dinegar said that "the human voice is strongly preferred by audiobook listeners" (Publishers Weekly).

The same Publishers Weekly article reports a study by Spoken, an AI audiobook company, which says it commissioned the work. Over 1,000 US fiction listeners were surveyed in May 2026. For character-driven fiction, an AI version with several character voices scored higher than a single human narrator on favorability (61% against 53%). Human narration scored higher for exposition with no multiple characters. Treat the result as vendor-released, and remember that the AI version used several voices.

A pre-publishing checklist

Before you upload, read the AI audiobook narration workflow for the production steps. If you have not picked a voice yet, the voice selection guide covers how to audition one.

  • Confirm that you hold the audio rights for the book.
  • Check that the store supports your language and region.
  • Decide whether the store wants your audio files or an EPUB.
  • Add the store's required label or sentence to the description.
  • Keep records of any consent for cloned voices.
  • Recheck the store's rules on the day you upload, because programs change.

Frequently asked questions

Does Audible allow AI-narrated audiobooks?

Not through a standard ACX upload. ACX requires human narration unless it is authorized, and it prohibits unauthorized AI recordings. Amazon's KDP Virtual Voice is an invite-only beta for eligible ebooks in the US, and it is the main indie route that these sources show.

Does ACX accept AI narration?

Only in limited, authorized cases. ACX's Voice Replica beta lets selected narrators create a replica of their own voice, and titles that use it are labelled. Other AI narration is prohibited under ACX's current submission requirements.

What is KDP Virtual Voice and who can use it?

KDP Virtual Voice is an invite-only beta from Amazon for eligible ebooks in the US marketplace. The book must be reflowable and in English, Spanish, Italian or French, and it cannot be public domain. The list price runs from $3.99 to $14.99, with a 40% royalty during the beta.

Can I upload ElevenLabs audio to Audible or ACX?

Not to ACX, because it prohibits unauthorized AI recordings. INaudio accepts only unmodified LPF packages from ElevenLabs, not MP3 files, and it requires that AI narration is not identified as human. Check each store's current rules before you upload anything.

How do I label an AI-narrated audiobook?

Use the label the store requires. Spotify uses "Narrated by Digital Voice," Apple Books requires a specific opening sentence, and INaudio adds a disclosure automatically. The KDP page we read does not specify a label, so describe the narration plainly in the listing.

Do I need the audio rights to use AI narration?

For Google, Apple, KDP and INaudio, yes. You must hold the audio rights to the book. If you have a publishing contract, check its audiobook and AI clauses, because the Authors Guild's current model clauses address AI narration. This is general information, not legal advice.
